MANCHESTER CITY had two Brazilians to thank after booking their place in the FA Cup fifth round.
Martin Petrov opened the scoring with a belter early on, only for a Paul Hayes volley to raise hopes of an upset.
Nedum Onuoha slotted home at the end of the first half, before Sylvinho lit up the tie with a 25-yard rocket.
A Dedryk Boyata own goal had given Scunthorpe renewed hope on 70 minutes.
But a swift passing move was finished off by Robinho, in what could prove his last contribution in a City shirt.
The striker was the headline-grabbing selection for Roberto Mancini, who made eight changes to the side beat Manchester United in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg.
The home side made a good start, pressing right from kick-off with Gary Hooper bursting into the box where City goalkeeper Stuart Taylor had to get down low to save.
But City took the lead in the third minute when Robinho fed Petrov on the left, before the Bulgarian smashed a left-foot shot into the top corner.
Scunthorpe refused to hang their heads and pressed for an equaliser.
Martyn Woolford cut inside before firing a long-range effort across Taylor's goal in the 10th minute and five minutes later Scunthorpe came closer still.
First Hayes played Marcus Williams into the left side of the box and only a saving challenge by Abdi Ibrahim helped City shepherd the ball out for a corner.
Cliff Byrne got his head to McCann's corner only to see it hammer the underside of the crossbar then bounce down for Kompany to boot clear.
When the ball whizzed back into the box, Hayes shot wide from close range.
Onuoha fired a rare City shot high and wide in the 21st minute then Robinho shot straight at Murphy as chants of "what a waste of money" rang round a packed Glanford Park.
Petrov came close to a second when he curled a shot from the opposite flank which was held well by the diving Murphy.
The home side grabbed their equaliser in the 29th minute when McCann's short corner led to confusion in the City box and Hayes found space to volley into the top corner.
While there was a hint of offside, it was ichly deserved.
But City nudged back ahead in the final minute of a busy half when Ireland threaded a neat ball into the Scunthorpe box and Onuoha shot home from a tight angle.
City made one change at the break with Greg Cunningham replacing Nigel De Jong but the home side continued to push forward with more purpose.

But Sylvinho left them with a mountain to climb when his dipping 25-yarder silenced the home fans.
City almost grabbed a fourth in the 64th minute when Petrov's fierce shot was deflected out for a corner, from which keeper Murphy twice blocked shots on the line
Scunthorpe found renewed hope in the 70th minute when McCann floated in a corner from the right which dropped for captain Byrne to fire on target, a shot which went in off Dedryk Boyata.
But Robinho killed off the game with six minutes to go, lifting the ball over the keeper following a neat interchange.
